Unioil initiates a tree planting activity
October 15, 2009
With the recent devastation brought by tropical storm “Ondoy” and talk of
climate change, Unioil Petroleum Philippines Incorporated (UPPI) decided
to do away with grand celebration of the company’s 43rd Founding
Anniversary and instead it will initiate a tree planting activity on
October 17, 2009.
The activity will be held at the La Mesa Eco Park and Dam in Quezon City,
the tree planting is part of the series of activities lined up this month
to celebrate the company’s inception, Unioil Foundation Incorporated Chair
Janice Co said.
“Instead of fancy celebrations, we decided to hold a tree planting
activity to educate our employees about the need to protect the
environment. La Mesa watershed is very vital to us here in Metro Manila,
not only because it is our primary source of drinking water, but also
because its forest function as the lungs of the metropolis,” Co said.
Unioil employees from its main office in Ortigas Center, Pasig City, Sta.
Ana, Manila and Valenzuela City are scheduled to an audio visual briefing
by park officials to raise their environmental awareness and the need to
take care of the ecopark and dam which served as one of Metro Manila’s
watershed area.
The 2, 700 hectare watershed, 700 of which is the reservoir and 2, 000
hectares if the surrounding forest, is the primary source of drinking
water of about 12 million Metro Manila residents. The property is owned by
the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS).
It was the second time that Unioil, one of the country’s leading
independent oil player staged a similar activity to celebrate its founding
anniversary.
Last year, it also conducted a tree planting activity and a clean-up drive
in Manila Bay in cooperation with the local government of Pasay City, the
Solid Waste Management Office and the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG).
The company's former Chair, Paul Co said Unioil will continue to initiate
programs geared towards helping the underprivileged sector of society and
the promotion of environmental awareness, preservation and community
support.
“More than four decades after its founding, Unioil has remained committed
to its ideals of serving the public not only through the provision of
inexpensive yet high quality fuel products but also relevant programs such
as this tree planting activity, provision of scholarships and educational
grants as well as livelihood projects in communities where we are
located,” Co said.
He cited the programs of the company’s foundation whose main aim was to
bring the company’s ideals of public service to where it is needed the
most.
Aside from this, Unioil has also lead the way among local oil companies in
blazing the way for the introduction of environment-friendly fuels such as
the Quantum Supreme unleaded gasoline, said Unioil President Kenneth
Pundanera.
The product launched in 2002 was the first Clean Air Act Compliant
gasoline in the local market.
"The Quantum unleaded gasoline is the ultimate substitute to leaded
gasoline. It is an environmentally friendly, 93++ octane premium motor
gasoline with AVR+ additive recommended for high compression engines.
Benefits include valve lubrication for smoother engine performance,
improved fuel economy, reduced emissions thus maintains a cleaner engine.
Recommended uses for old and modern gasoline engines with compression
ration of 7.0 and above, Pundanera stated.
In 2003, Unioil, together with four other independent petroleum companies,
launched Pure Diesel, the first Clean Air Act Compliant diesel with 0.05%
sulfur.
Pundanera also said that Unioil has launched the improved PureDiesel Plus
Premium quality diesel at regular price. The said product is powered by
Greenburn Technology with 2% biodiesel. It is formulated to perform like a
premium diesel with benefits such as improved fuel efficiency, performance
and more power achieved through a complete combustion of diesel fuel that
lessens smoke emission, thereby contributing to a cleaner environment. ###
