Unioil offer Euro-4 diesel products

EASTERN Petroleum Corp. and Unioil Petroleum Philippines Inc. have started selling the country’s first Euro-IV compliant diesel, which has significantly lower emission impurities compared with other fuel products.

In a media briefing, Fernando Martinez, Eastern Petroleum chairman, said the new diesel products can help motorists decrease vehicles’ harmful emissions.

“Our campaign this year is green initiative. I am calling and challenging our bigger partners in the industry to follow the same path without charging more from consumers.

It’s about time that we set aside some business gains in favor of a cleaner air,” he said.

Euro-IV is a European emission standard, which consists of sets of requirements defining the acceptable limits for vehicle exhausts sold in the European Union member states.

These standards specify the progressive introduction of increasingly stringent fuel regulations in the market.

Euro-IV diesel has a low sulfur content of 50 parts per million (PPM). Diesel products sold in the Philippines to date are Euro-II compliant, containing 500 PPM of sulfur.

Martinez said that Eastern Petroleum and Unioil will not be charging their customers the extra cost of importing their Euro-IV diesel, which is P0.50 per liter more expensive than lower-graded products.

The two oil companies are jointly importing the said products from Korea to save on transport costs.

Kenneth Pundanera, Unioil president, said they are also mulling higher emission standards of their gasoline products within the year.

“We still have to make sure the supply is consistent,” he said.
